Children of the Tragedy
I came across this poem quite a while ago when I was researching child soldiers for a project on human rights abuses, and it touched me deeply. I found it again studying for my HSC and just thought I would share it. It really makes me realise how lucky we are to live in a country of peace.
We, children of the tragedy, We bear inside undressable wounds. We bear a history of dehumanised humanity In Algeria or in Bosnia, in Rwanda or Uganda … How many are we? Tens, thousands … Whose lives have been taken, Whose dreams have been stolen, Whose rights have been violated. We live in a city where there is confusion, Where the blood flows, Where horror and terror are sown, Where arbitrariness is as powerful as the law.
We, children of the tragedy, We need to be relieved, To be protected, loved and guided … We bear inside the fate of Humanity, Dare to transform our tragedy Into a symphony of peace and fraternity. At least respect the declarations you signed, The Human Rights Declaration is an eternal guide.
